Digital media have become an integral part of our daily lives. In a special session, the IT Planning Council, the central political steering committee for the digitization of administration, prioritized federal administrative services that are to be made available digitally across the board by the end of the year. This includes enrollment. Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences has taken the next step toward digitization and, together with UniNow GmbH, has replaced the paper ID card with a digital university ID card

UniNow GmbH has already been cooperating with Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences since the winter semester 2019/20 and provides students with a variety of individual study-related data. For example, the app allows access to the email inbox, the dining hall schedule, or even the timetable. In addition, the borrowing account of the university library can be viewed and books can be renewed directly, grades can be queried and the student's own grade point average can be calculated.

A new function of the app is the digital student ID card. In the future, students will be able to use it to quickly and easily identify themselves for exams, university sports, and general contact with the university administration.

In addition, in cooperation with Magdeburger Verkehrsbetriebe (MVB), the digital ID can now also be used as a ticket on buses and trains in Magdeburg. With the smartphone, the ticket is always with you and annoying printouts and forgotten tickets are finally over. The semester ticket for Stendal is to be delivered by DBregio before the start of the winter semester 2022/23 and implemented with UniNow GmbH.

Students will also be able to access their digital library card. This makes it easier to borrow media from the university library, especially if the library card has been forgotten.

As an additional function, the digital ID card can also be used as a European Student Identifier (ESI) for Erasmus+ to easily identify international students at European universities.

"Data security was at the top of the list of requirements," says André Nollmann, initiator and supervisor of the project. Thus, when implementing the project, care was taken to ensure that data protection and data security were top priorities. For example, a data-saving interface was developed so that no personal data is stored on UniNow's servers and the ID card data is only stored on the user's terminal device. In addition, UniNow is externally audited annually by TÜV Süd in terms of data protection and data security to ensure the highest standards.

"We are pleased with the successful implementation of the digital student ID and that we will be able to offer students an even better range of services in the future with the digital ID," adds Stefan Wegener, Managing Director of UniNow GmbH.
